Ponerinae
In all castes the petiole is in the form of a thickened node which may be simple or variously ornamented. All tibiae have pectinate spurs. Wings where present have two closed cubital cells and one discoidal cell. Stings in female castes are well developed. Pupae are enclosed in cocoons. (from Collingwood, 1979).
This subfamily includes about 70 general, most of which occur in the tropics and subtropics. In Northern Europe only two genera are represented in the tribe Ponerini, each with a single species (Collingwood, 1979).
